Drill 1: estimate the fall line

Commence this exploration by encircling the green, gauging the overall terrain as you move. Develop an initial estimate of the fall line based on your visual assessment of the slope. Once you have a preliminary sense of the fall line, it's time to put theory into practice. Choose a starting point on the green that allows for an uphill putt toward the hole.

As you putt uphill, aim directly for the hole with the intention of following the perceived fall line. Observe the ball's trajectory closely. If, during its journey, the ball deviates to the right of your intended path, take note. Similarly, if it veers to the left, make a mental mark of this occurrence. The key lies in the art of adjustment.

For each subsequent putt, introduce a slight lateral shift in your starting position based on the observed deviation of the previous attempt. If the ball veered right, move slightly to the right of your original position. Conversely, if it veered left, shift slightly to the left. Repeat this process iteratively, putting and adjusting until you notice the ball rolling in a straight line towards the hole.

This meticulous exercise in adjustment serves a dual purpose. On one hand, it refines your ability to discern the intricacies of the fall line by adapting to the green's subtle undulations. On the other hand, it cultivates a heightened sense of touch and control in your putting technique. The cumulative effect of these adjustments guides you towards a more accurate identification of the fall line.

This method fosters a dynamic engagement with the putting green, transforming the act of putting into an interactive and educational experience. By integrating movement, observation, and adjustment, golfers develop a nuanced understanding of how the green influences the path of the ball. The iterative nature of the process encourages adaptability, honing a golfer's capacity to read the green with finesse.

In conclusion, the technique of walking around the green, estimating the fall line, and refining your perception through strategic putts is a comprehensive and experiential approach to mastering the intricacies of putting.

This method not only enhances your ability to identify the fall line but also nurtures a tactile and adaptive skill set that is invaluable on the golf course. Through this dynamic process, golfers can elevate their putting game by forging a deeper connection with the subtleties of the green's topography.
